PRSF Summer Camp – Session 1
June 12, 2017 - June 16, 2017
Building Boats & Exploring the Pluff Mud!
We are excited to partner with the Lowcountry Maritime Society of Charleston to offer a one-of-a-kind youth summer camp at the Maritime Center. The one-week camp will be held twice this summer and includes a combination of wooden boat-building, kayaking and junior naturalist activities.
Campers will be guided through the construction of three wooden skiffs, a design with a deep history in our region. Not only will campers learn about local maritime history and culture, they’ll also learn to follow design plans, use building tools and apply new skills for building a boat.
When not working on the boats, campers spend time kayaking and participating in junior naturalist activities that highlight different themes and experiences, including ecology, arts, history, conservation and boater safety. Campers will take part in activities around the Maritime Center that will expand their knowledge of and encourage their interaction with the local environment.
Camp is open to ages 10 and up. Two sessions, running Monday through Friday, will be offered. Drop off at 9 a.m. and pick up at 4 p.m. each day. Lunch is provided daily.
- Session 1: June 12-16
- Session 2: June 26-30
By the end of camp, participants will:
- Be more aware and appreciative of the Port Royal Sound.
- Have a sense of accomplishment through the construction of the boats.
- Have developed new skills from working with counselors and naturalists.
- Have created new friendships through team-oriented activities.
To top it off, the wooden skiffs will be ready for launch in the Chechessee River.
Cost for each one-week session is $325. In addition to lunch each day, campers will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Click on the images below for the camp brochure and application (two pages).
